Artist Statement
I run a small artisan bookbinding studio in North Uist. I love adhering to traditional bookbinding techniques whilst at the same time exploring and developing new approaches. I place my work firmly in the context of the island that surrounds me, working with the colours, fabrics and materials present here including sand from local beaches, fish netting, rubber gloves and other beach finds as well as leather and beautiful Hebridean Tweed. In my artist papers I play with rock, water and seaweed patterns whilst the very process of making these papers with the melting of wax with ink and dyes echoes the melting of sediments in the formation of rocks defining the Uist shore line and the fluid movements and patterns of the underwater shore.
The joy of bookbinding is the variety of work that fills every day in the studio:
- Books and boxes made to order and for sale in my studio shop
- Artist books and papers
- Bespoke commissions of books, boxes and portfolios
- Repair and rebinding
- 1-2-1 or group workshops in different bookbinding and box making techniques
- Book kits with everything in them to make a book yourself
As one of the islands of the Outer Hebrides, North Uist has many visitors throughout the year and bespoke 1-2-1, 1-2-2- or small group bookbinding workshops have become an integral part to the work I do as a bookbinder. And if you are looking for a place to stay not far from the studio, we have a cosy wee pod right next door which can be booked through my website.
