Artist Statement
I was born in Harris, studied at Glasgow School of Art, and after working as a part time art teacher and raising my family, I returned to live in my home village of Quidinish in a stunning location, overlooking Finsbay, in the East coast Bays of Harris where I welcome visitors from all over the world, who enjoy the rugged beauty of the area.
Many of these visitors return and become friends.
I work mainly in watercolour, mixed media, Indian Ink, Japanese woodblock printing and 3D paperworks.
There are up to 200 original artworks on display from small unframed work to larger framed pieces and unframed canvases.
I speak Gaelic and am happy to converse with those who speak it and learners of the language.
The culture and crofting traditions of the island are an interest I like to share. My family goes back generations with links to Berneray, Pabbay, Harris, Rosshire and St Kilda.
Both grandmothers wove Harris tweed on wooden looms and I have a Jacket, hand dyed, spun and woven by my grandmother. One of the dyes used was made using Lichen scraped from the rocks to produce a russet colour. This is of great interest to my visitors.
A warm welcome awaits at Holmasaig Studio Gallery.
