Artist Statement
I am an artist and printmaker living and working on the Isle of Lewis. I create limited edition hand-pulled prints and mixed media artwork inspired by the island environment. My work includes a variety of printmaking techniques: collagraph, relief printing, monoprinting, dry point etching, printing with packaging and found objects.
I have cards and calendars based on my original work and I teach workshops in my studio and at An Lanntair.
Printmaking is a series of processes from the original sketch to planning the design, building or carving the printing plate/s, inking up and printing. I use a Hawthorne etching press or a book press depending on the technique I am using. The best part of printmaking is the ‘reveal’ as I peel away the paper to see the finished print.
I am always exploring new ways to work and my prints are experimental and vary in style and content.
In 2024 I was approached to write a book on printmaking and the result will be published in Spring 2025. It is called ‘Exploring Printmaking’ and is a practical handbook of printmaking techniques that do not need expensive or complicated equipment. Based on my teaching experience, all the ideas have been tried and tested by me and a variety of students here on Lewis.
